R. MARKS Biology has turn into a 'numbers game'. the benefits of with the ability to grade alterations in tissue, put up effects to statistical research and effectively list organic phenomena make size crucial. this can be as real for many of the disciplines in utilized biology because it is for the extra esoteric facets ofthe topic. unfortunately, sk in biologists till lately had no longer seized the possibilities that the provision in their tissue of curiosity afforded and fell at the back of within the exploration of dimension options. most likely this ended in half from the incorrect sentiment that 'to see is to know'. It additionally originated from the complexity ofthe epidermis which. as a heavily interwoven combination oftissue kinds. makes tests technically tough. notwithstanding, we're positive in regards to the destiny. The foreign Society for Bioengineering and the surface used to be shaped in Cardiff in ] uly 1979 in keeping with the needs of the delegates who had attended the 1st foreign Symposium at the topic in Miami in 1976 and the second one in Cardiff three years later. This quantity is the court cases of the Cardiff assembly. We think that it demonstrates the courageous efforts and diversity of latest rules that characterise the experiences of scientists who realize the significance of mixing the actual sciences with epidermis biology.

GUNNER, E. W. WILLIAMS, M. GREAVES, W. C. HUTTON and T. E. BURLIN SUMMARY Brief descriptions are given of apparatuses which are being used to determine changes in the mechanical properties of human skin in vivo. Results are presented from a study of five patients who received large doses of prednisolone for the treatment of alopecia. Preliminary results in three patients treated with PUV A (photochemotherapy with long-wavelength ultraviolet radiation) for psoriasis are also included. The results of treatment with prednisolone showed that no significant change occurred in any of the mechanical properties.

Surprisingly, olive oil, glycerine and sodium pyroglutamate each had no effect. 2 Typical effect of various agents on skin slackness. 1 em. 52 IN VIVO MEASUREMENT OF ELASTIC PROPERTIES DISCUSSION Does our approach satisfy all the scientific criteria for measuring the effect of medicocosmetic agents on the skin in vivo? Clearly, the ans'Yer is 'not yet'; a lot remains to be done. Scientifically, we have yet to show the exact form of correlation between water content in vivo and our measurements.
