Secondly, the term “trap” in this metaphor refers to the sad fact that once a group, an organization, or a society has ended up in such a state, it is usually very difficult to escape. To breach an enduring social trap would require people who (for good or bad reasons) have developed deep mutual mistrust over a long time to suddenly begin to trust one another and thus erase their memories about the untrustworthy and deceitful behavior of the other group (Elster 1989a: 26).
